Pops & Bangs / Burble
Exhaust crackle on overrun and gear changes — available with or without power tuning.
Pops & Bangs (also called crackle, burble or popcorn) changes the sound of the exhaust on overrun: when you lift off the throttle or change gears, fuel is ignited in the exhaust and produces the characteristic pops.

Questions and answers
- Does it add power? — No, it only changes the sound in transient modes.
- Which cars? — Almost any petrol engine whose software has fuel and ignition maps for overrun. On some diesels the sound can be changed near the rev limiter.
- From which rpm? — On petrol engines usually from 2,000–3,000 rpm upwards.
- Exhaust requirements — the car must have a modified exhaust without catalytic converter / particulate filter. On a stock exhaust the effect is weak and can damage the catalyst or filter over time.
- Engine life — with a correct calibration engine life is not reduced; the extra heat load is on the exhaust system.
